I never rant on this site but this time I feel like I need to. Let me tell you a little story, a sort of annoying one, the kind of tale that makes me mad about the music industry and the way it “works” nowadays.

You all remember those Ozark Henry remixes I did a while back, right? Well, at first, it was just a project for fun. Through some common acquaintances I managed to get in touch with Piet (Ozark Henry) and asked him if I could grab parts from a couple of his songs to make remixes for my own purpose. I really liked his voice and his sense of melody and I thought two tracks had a really good potential to be turned into floor fillers.

So I did the remixes and played them a lot, Piet liked them very much and it seemed that people were wanting to buy them. So, all good, right? Right.

I finally met with Piet in Paris to talk about it but his manager kept on insisting that we released them on vinyl too. I told him that no netlabel would be ready to invest money for such a release but that I was in touch with a few of them eager to get it out there on Beatport.

Nothing happened.

At that point, I asked Piet if I could simply put them as a free download on my website, to which he first agreed but then, after talking with his manager, he changed his mind.

Was I a bit pissed? You bet your ass I was.

Anyways… I completely forgot about the whole thing for a while when one day… A letter from a lawyer. In short, he was working for Ozark Henry and was asking if I was ok to release the “Christine” vocal mix on a forthcoming compilation. The deal was shady and I fought them a bit about it but eventually, I signed the contract, very happy that at least this one was going to see the light of day.

And on the 21st of November, it finally came out on Beatport.

I was so happy and ready to tell the world about it when I realized that the track timing as told by Beatport was a bit… off. 7 minutes for an original 9+ minutes remix, that was a bit weird. So I bought it and gave it a listen.

You know what? It was a raw rip directly from the compilation DJ mix, not the actual track. No intro, no outro. Which means that basically nobody would be able to play it since it’s already mixed with a couple of other tracks at the beginning and at the end. Unplayable. Useless.

A slightly bit pissed? Make that 10000 times more.

So now what? Well, nothing. The remix is out. I’m probably gonna make zero money out of it because no-one is going to buy it in its current form… And that will be that.

Sad, isn’t it? Well, welcome to the crazy world of the music industry.

See you guys, I’m gonna find myself a new hobby.

2010 was a pretty big year for me: a lot of awesome gigs, a lot of well charted releases and remixes, all in all I could not be happier about those last 12 months and can only hope than the next 12 are going to be as amazing.
